Dow Jones Increases; S&P 500, NASDAQ Declines

NEW YORK (AP) -- A volatile session on Wall Street ended with mixed results Tuesday as a forecast of continued economic growth kept investors on edge about interest rates.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 31.35, closing at 10,677.31 after shifting between positive and negative territory for much of the day.

Broader stock indicators were lower. The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 5.87 to 1,322.18 and the Nasdaq composite index, dominated by technology stocks, fell 35.64 to 2,587.99 as Internet stocks faltered. With Tuesday's loss, the Nasdaq is down 9.7 percent from its July 16 record of 2,864.48.

"The general tenor is one of malaise," said Scott Bleier, chief investment strategist at Prime Charter Ltd. While volume outpaced the sluggish trading of recent sessions, stocks pitched up and down in a fairly narrow range as buyers found little reason to return to the market. The number of stocks that slumped easily outnumbered those that improved. …
