Methodist Group Gets Lots of Mileage from Its Miniature Race Car Sponsorship

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- No one would have blamed Sam Beam if he had kicked a tire or slammed a hood in frustration when fortune turned sour with his miniature 1937 Ford Coupe. Instead, the former national go-kart champion only smiled. With sweat beading on his forehead, the 18-year-old Beam and his crew leaned over his car, trying to figure out why his brakes gave out last month in two preliminary races at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

"Sometimes you just have to sit down and pray," Beam said after finishing 15th in a 20-car race. "It doesn't matter whether your brakes fail. With God you're always a winner."

Beam's car, easily recognized by the words "Methodist Motorsports Evangelism" on it, is the only one in the Legends series that is sponsored by a religious group. Methodist Motorsports Evangelism is a program of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. It uses the car as a way to promote the Christian faith, just as Nascar sponsors put logos on cars to promote cigarettes, alcohol or other consumer products. …
