While the Internet has given companies of all sizes the ability to get work done faster and more easily, it gives the small business owner something extra: more lifestyle options.

Doing business online can save huge amounts of time for an entrepreneur with a home-based company or a firm that employs a handful of workers.

Suppose, instead of making your weekly trip to the post office to buy stamps for your company, you download postage from the Internet and print it directly onto envelopes or labels. You've saved a half- hour or more, time that could be spent on work that's more integral to your business.

Or you could spend that time with your family or going out for a cup of coffee (maybe that trip to the post office has been a nice break for you; but with the Internet, you now have a choice of where to take that break).

On a much larger scale, the Internet might help you run a business and still fulfill your dream of living in another part of the country, or even the world.

If a business doesn't have to be in a particular location, because of the Internet it can now be done from anywhere, said Paul Edwards, who with his wife Sarah has written several handbooks for small business owners. Edwards said people who set up transcription services, for example, or who work as administrative assistants, are able to do their work over the Internet, even if their clients are hundreds of miles away.

"Living anywhere you want can be an option -- we're going to see an increase in people moving to places that have mountains and water," he said.

That kind of flexibility can help you decide which business to be in. Robert Spiegel, a writer who used the Internet to build a list of clients, said, "you can create a business with your computer and your skills."

In the day-to-day operations of a company, entrepreneurs can find they can accomplish more and have more spare time by doing as much as possible online.
