Single-Family Building Permits Drop 52%

Article excerpt

Metro single-family building permits fell 52 percent in July, according to a report Tuesday by the Central Oklahoma Home Builders Association.

The decline was expected due to the rise in permits last year following the May 1999 tornado, said Mike Grissom, president-elect of COHBA.

"You can see a spike in the permits around this time last year due largely in part to the tornado," Grissom explained. "If you take the tornado construction out and you look at 1999 without that, comparing to `98 and `97, we do have a decline, but not as severe a decline as was indicated."

The 15 metro area governments issued 276 permits in July 1997 and 369 in July 1998. A total of 294 permits were assigned in July 2000, the lowest for a month so far this year and 9.5 percent less than the 325 permits issued in June this year.

Edmond and Mustang were the only communities showing a gain in permits issued in July -- not just from last year, but also from June. Edmond assigned 43 permits last month, up 43.3 percent from 30 a year ago and an identical 30 permits issued in June. The 19 permits granted by Mustang topped eight in July 1999 and five in June.

Oklahoma City issued 160 permits last month, down 51 percent from 326 in July last year and down 9.6 percent from 177 in June 2000.

Midwest City issued seven permits last month, down from 31 a year ago and down 46 percent from 13 granted in June.

The Village did not assign any permits last month, 12 less than July last year. It also did not issue any in June this year.

Oklahoma County's five permits issued last month plunged 72.2 percent from 18 a year ago and 64.3 percent less than 14 permits issued in June.

Last month Yukon assigned six permits, down 25 percent from eight a year ago, but up 50 percent from four in June.

Moore's 12 permits issued last month dipped 81.5 percent from 65 last year and 60 percent from 30 in June. …
