SWB Officials Provide $30 Million to Activate Educational Fund

Officials with Southwestern Bell Telephone handed over a check for $30 million Tuesday to activate the $30 million Oklahoma Educational Technology Fund for public and career technology schools.

The fund is part of an alternative rate transition plan finalized by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission in 1999.

"This is a great day for education in Oklahoma," said Attorney General Drew Edmondson, who negotiated the agreement for the state. "This is a wonderful thing and a long-term legacy for Oklahoma."

Southwestern Bell Oklahoma President Jim Epperson gave the check to Julie Knutson, with the Oklahoma Academy for State Goals, who immediately passed it on to members of a seven-member trust.

"The Oklahoma Educational Technology Trust will provide a significant, perpetual source of funding for the technology future of our state's common and vocational schools," said Edmondson.

"The trust will oversee the placement of new computer hardware, software and other telecommunications equipment in our classrooms, so that students across our state have an opportunity to claim a place in the information age. …
