LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) -- Brunswick Corp. said Friday it has sold its Zebco fishing reel division to privately held W.C. Bradley Co. of Columbus, Ga., for an undisclosed price.

The sale comes one year after Brunswick announced plans to get out of the bicycle, camping and fishing equipment businesses to focus on its more profitable units in the boating industry and elsewhere.

Earlier this year, Zebco closed its factory in Tulsa after 52 years and shifted production to Asia. The company said it could no longer compete with cheaper and flashier reels produced by tackle companies that moved their manufacturing abroad long ago.

Zebco lost about 40 percent of the spincast reel market share between 1995 and 2000.

George Buckley, Brunswick's chairman and chief executive officer, said the sale marks another important step in the divestiture of its outdoor businesses. In the past year, the Lake Forest-based company has sold its bicycle, sleeping bag, camping equipment, Remington outdoor clothing and Hoppe's shooting sports accessories businesses. …
