As this is being written, the appalling news accounts of the New York and Washington terrorist attacks are still coming in. We are all still in a state of shock.

War has been declared upon the United States. War has been waged against our homeland. For the second time in our history, our country has been plunged into war by an enemy's sneak attack. We now know firsthand how our parents and grandparents must have felt after Dec. 7, 1941.

We cannot now know all of the effects the horrible events of Sept. 11 will ultimately have upon our lives. I think we can all agree, though, our lives have all been changed forever.

Perhaps more importantly, the lives of our nation's children may have been forever changed. What kind of America will they grow up in? How will we explain to them how it used to be in the United States before Sept. 11? …
