SSM Health Care to Celebrate Major Enhancements

SSM Health Care will celebrate two major service enhancements to its Oklahoma City operations on Thursday.

* St. Anthony Hospital will open its Lung Cancer Detection and Treatment Center.

* St. Michael Hospital will dedicate its Medical Library.

The Lung Cancer Detection and Treatment Center at St. Anthony's Frank C. Love Cancer Institute will provide a multidisciplinary team approach intended to speed up patient diagnoses and treatment.

"For years there has been the need for lung cancer patients to see several different kinds of doctors and to get a variety of tests, which could mean appointments with many doctors to simply get a diagnosis and begin a treatment plan," said the center's medical director, Dr. James Blalock.

"Our center will have all the physicians who need to participate in this process in one spot so that the patient can get the physician attention they need along with tests, scans and imaging."

Hospital officials noted Oklahoma has a higher rate of lung cancer than the national average.

To help expedite service, the center employs a "Nurse Navigator" program to oversee a patient's care. It is headed by certified oncology nurse Julie Hensley.

"The Nurse Navigator program is hugely reassuring," said Blalock. "Instead of three doctors a patient sees once, there is someone you've known from the start who has set things up, who explains things, and is there when you need them. The Nurse Navigator program gives each patient a person, a face to focus on."

The center's medical team includes a thoracic surgeon, medical oncologist and radiation oncologist.

St. Michael's expanded library -- double its previous size -- extends services to hospital staff and patients. The library will feature new computers, CD-ROMs and educational videos as well as research material available from the Medical Library Association.

The St. Michael library is accessible 24-hours to physicians with librarians on staff Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
