Robert Butkin Steps Down as Dean of University of Tulsa College of Law

Robert Butkin is stepping down as dean of the University of Tulsa College of Law effective June 30, TU President Steadman Upham said Thursday.

Butkin, a former Oklahoma state treasurer, will serve as a tenured law professor beginning with the school's fall semester.

He has headed the law school since June 2005.

"This has been a difficult decision to make because of my great fondness for the college of law and the immense personal pleasure I have derived from being a part of a team committed to its betterment," Butkin said. "However, the demands of having a young family and pressing family business obligations compel me to redirect my priorities at this time."

Butkin is an attorney, but also has a family background in oil and gas. He said that unanticipated responsibilities in the latter will require some attention in the coming months.

"Periodically you just re-evaluate your life," Butkin said. "I have loved this job. We have made great progress."

Butkin said that being dean has been complex and interesting, but pretty much a 24/7 job.

Butkin and his wife Nina have three daughters, ranging in age from 2 to 5 years old.

"We just wanted a path that would provide me more quality time with the children," he said.

Butkin said the decision as to what courses he may teach will be made by his successor as dean. …
