Commentary: Lot Lines: Sperry Praises OKC

Unbeknownst to most of the local industry, an important commercial real estate conference took place last week at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City that welcomed some of the industry's most prominent figures.

A number of this region's most successful brokers and executives made their first trip to Oklahoma City as Irvine, Calif.,-based Sperry Van Ness hosted its central regional conference for the first time in the capital city. While the conference was designed as an insular event for the company's regional advisors to network with each other and interact with corporate executives, it proved to be an incredible opportunity to showcase the growth the city has experienced to these advisors who represent clients with millions of dollars to invest.

Many of the advisers were simply blown away by the redevelopment having transpired in the city over the past decade, giving them a view of Oklahoma City as a major player in the national commercial real estate scene.

Probably no one was more impressed than Rand Sperry himself, the co-founder of the company who made the journey from Irvine to attend the conference.

Sperry is one of only three living executives who founded a top 20 national commercial real estate firm in America. His partner Mark Van Ness and Roger Staubach of Staubach Company are the other two. During the conference, Sperry remarked that Oklahoma City was the best small city that he had visited and praised the way the MAPS program had infused so much private development into the central core of Oklahoma City. He added the MAPS program serves as a prime model for other cities looking to revitalize the economy of their downtown areas. …
