Drunk Driving Is No. 1 Cause of Traffic-Related Deaths: MOI

The China Post news staff--Drunk driving was cited as the No. 1 cause of death within 24 hours of traffic accidents in the first 11 months of the year, accounting to the Ministry of the Interior (MOI).

Statistics compiled by the MOI showed that during the 11-month period, there were 1,847 traffic accidents that witnessed victims die on the spot or within 24 hours, up 3.47 percent from a year earlier and leading to 1,919 deaths and 798 injuries.

The tallies indicated that 20.47 percent of such deaths were caused by drunk driving, higher than the percentages for any other cause.

During the same period, the number of traffic accidents that led to injuries on the spot or deaths seen more than 24 hours later came to 203,860, up 3.28 percent from a year earlier. Such accidents caused as many as 272,432 injuries, up 2.63 percent from a year earlier.

Of the deaths seen within 24 hours after traffic accidents, 47.3 percent involved motorcycles, followed by 23.23 percent for sedans and 18.57 percent for trucks. …
