REGINA - Emotions ran raw in a Regina courtroom as an 86-year-old man admitted to sexually assaulting his two granddaughters over a 13-year period starting in the 1980s.

Pete Therrien of Willow Bunch, Sask., wept at Thursday's sentencing hearing, allowing that most of what he is accused of is true.

But he denied assaulting the girls in public places including a parked car and a golf course, saying he only touched them when they were at home.

He also initially denied reaching under their clothing to touch them, but under cross-examination said he couldn't remember exactly what had happened.

The victims, Nicole and Leanne Eger, went public with their story last year.

They say the molestation began when they were around four years of age.

"I was always trying to fight him off, always trying to get away," Leanne testified Thursday. "He forced me. I don't know why I never screamed or called for help."

When asked why they hadn't come forward earlier, Nicole said: "It was taboo to talk about it; you just didn't talk about it. …
