Jonathan Brunelle brought his club one step closer to securing the final playoff spot while making it that much more difficult for the P.E.I. Rocket in the process.

Brunelle had a goal and an assist in regulation time, then added the shoootout winner, as his Cape Breton Screaming Eagles defeated the visiting Rocket 5-4 on Friday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

The Screaming Eagles (22-39-3) currently hold down the final playoff spot with 47 points and, despite picking up a single point in the shootout loss, P.E.I. (18-40-6) is now five points behind Cape Breton with only four games remaining in the season.

Alexandre Lavoie scored once and set up two more for the Screaming Eagles, who snapped a seven-game losing streak, Michael Clarke had a goal and an assist and Cory MacIntosh added a single goal.

Antoine Venne, Louick Marcotte, Josh Currie and Marc-Andre Levesque each scored for the Rocket, who have won just once in their past 10 games, while Jimmy Oligny and Ben Duffy chipped in with two assists each.

Philippe Trudeau made 31 saves for his 15th win of the season as Maxime Lagace stopped 30 shots in defeat.

Both clubs went 2-for-5 on the power play.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL, it was: Acadie-Bathurst 4, Moncton 2; Drummondville 3, Quebec 1; Victoriaville 5, Baie-Comeau 2; Rimouski 5, Shawinigan 3; Blainville-Boisbriand 5, Rouyn-Noranda 0; Chicoutimi 4, Saint John 3 (SO) and Val-d'Or 6, Gatineau 5 (OT).

At Sydney, N.S., the Screaming Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and extended it to four goals in the second before P.E.I. finally responded.

Clarke opened the scoring 2:01 into the game, MacIntosh followed at 11:07 and Brunelle scored on the power play at 18:53.

Lavoie added another power-play goal for Cape Breton at 8:22 of the second but 27 seconds later Venne got one back for the Rocket.

Levesque and Marcotte added power-play goals 1:03 apart to make it 4-3 Screaming Eagles after 40 minutes of play. …
