(BC-Teachers-Dispute)

Report cards and parent-teacher meetings have been off the books for months, but it's unclear whether back-to-work legislation that's expected to be passed today will set things right in the classroom.

Glen Hansman with the B-C teachers' union says members will decide this weekend how to respond to Bill 22 after it's expected to get royal ascent in the legislature by 5 p-m.

He says nothing in the bill outright defines what it means to return to full duties, so they'll discuss and take a vote at the union's annual general meeting.

Hansman says there's been a groundswell of support for ending voluntary extracurricular activities to show the teachers' opposition to the bill, but that too will be determined in the coming days. (The Canadian Press)

(BC-Teachers-Dispute-Abbott)

Today, Education Minister George Abbott has plans to get his own house in order -- by Saturday, he'll be showing it off to the Chinese.

Abbott flies to Shanghai this weekend to promote B-C's schools, where some Chinese institutions already use this province's curriculum.

The trip will occur fresh on the expected passage of the B-C Liberals' back-to-work legislation.

Abbott had defended his decision to travel as the dispute continues, saying he believes it's an optimal time as many students are on spring break. (News1130, CKNW)

The University of B-C has decided to consider students' Grade 11 marks when deciding admissions for next year in light of the ongoing teachers' dispute.

Members of the campus senate voted last night to alter its policy so that admissions can be completed in their usual time frame and in a way that is "fair for all students."

The university says it's made the move in recognition of the anxiety students and their families are facing, especially as some B-C students have not received their traditional spring report cards. …
