Chantal VanLandeghem Claims Two Medals at Swimming Summer Nationals

EDMONTON - Winnipeg's Chantal VanLandeghem won a gold and a silver medal Friday at the Canadian summer swimming nationals.

VanLandeghem won gold in the women's 100-metre freestyle, finishing in 55.20 seconds. Sandrine Mainville of Boucherville, Que., was second in 55.66 and Chantique Payne of Guelph, Ont., third in 56.30.

Later in the evening, VanLandeghem got a silver in the 50-metre backstroke following Dominique Bouchard of North Bay, Ont.

The medals have brought motivation back to the 18-year-old VanLandeghem, after a bitter finish in the 100 freestyle at the Olympic trials in Montreal. She missed a spot at the London Games by just 0.01 seconds.

"I was a rough couple of weeks after the trials but everything is OK now," said VanLandeghem. "It was important for me to get back into the water and start training. I really want to finish the year on a high note at these competitions.
