Editorial Exchange: It's been done before

An editorial from the Corner Brook Western Star, published Aug. 16:

There was a flurry of coverage this week as the Canadian Auto Workers began negotiations on a new deal with automakers in this country -- almost exclusively Ontario, that is.

The startup of talks was a good reminder of the desperate state that industry has rebounded from and who helped them hang on until the automakers could make over their businesses.

For those who don't remember the months of handwringing during that desperate time, the federal and Ontario governments helped save the so-called Big Three by giving them a rescue package worth $13 billion.

It's a good lesson for those in this province who keep calling for our provincial government to stop trying to help Corner Brook Pulp and Paper survive.

A few years ago, there was a great deal of doubt that the automakers could make a go of it and survive -- maintaining the 20,000 or so jobs that go along with it. …
