Canada 1-2 in women's breaststroke at Pan Pacifics

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii - Kierra Smith of Kelowna, B.C., and Mariya Chekanovych of Burnaby, B.C., won gold and silver respectively on Friday in a thrilling women's 100-metre breaststroke final at the junior Pan Pacific swimming championships.

Smith clocked one minute 8.54 seconds, edging Chekanovych by only 0.01 seconds. Miku Kanasashi of Japan was third in 1:08.63. Both times were personal bests for the Canadians.

"I was really excited about the race, I've had a good year and it all came together tonight," said Smith. "I had no idea how close the race was, I was just trying to get to the wall as fast as possible. My first 50 was really relaxed instead of rushed so I was able to have a strong finish."

Added Chekanovych: "Last year I had difficulty swimming at this level so I was pretty nervous going in. I tried to focus on the positives. I didn't expect this medal; the 200 breaststroke coming up is my best event. …
