Kaohsiung District Court Detains Army Cadet over Attempted Murder

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Kaohsiung District Court yesterday approved prosecutors' request to detain an Army cadet over an attempted murder in the Southern Taiwan city.

The cadet was arrested late Monday for allegedly stabbing another cadet at the Military Academy in Kaohsiung, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said yesterday.

Speaking at an MND press conference in Taipei, academy superintendent Liu Te-chin ([...]) expressed regret over the incident.

According to Liu, the arrested cadet, surnamed Wu, is a freshman in the academy. The academy suspects that Wu, under stress after falling behind in his schoolwork, committed the crime in order to be expelled, Liu said.

Wu was trying to escape from his dormitory at the academy around 3 a.m. Monday but was stopped by a cadet standing guard nearby, according to Kaohsiung police authorities.

Wu alleged took a knife and stabbed the on-guard cadet twice in the back before escaping the campus, police said. …
