The Alberta government is fending off attacks over news that billionaire Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz, his relatives and his associates donated 300-thousand dollars to the Tories' re-election campaign.

The money from Katz, his wife, mother, father, his executive team and their related companies represented 20 per cent of total donations to the party.

Premier Alison Redford says no matter how much money her party got from Katz, there will be no direct taxpayer subsidy for a new hockey rink.

But opposition politicians weren't buying it.

(School-Crash) (Watch for dating) (Will be audio)

A junior high school in St. Paul, Alberta, will be closed today in the aftermath of a tragic incident in which a van crashed into a classroom in the building.

Three youngsters are in hospital in Edmonton in critical condition, one of them an 11-year-old girl who is described as having life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses say the van had been driving erratically and nearly hit a pedestrian before it smashed into the school. The three youngsters were pinned under the vehicle.

R-C-M-P say the van's driver, a 46-year-old man from St. Paul, received minor injuries and was taken into custody. (The Canadian Press)

New legislation will offer new home buyers in Alberta more protection and the province says it's designed to be the strongest warranty of its kind in Canada.

Bill 5, the New Home Buyer Protection Act, requires builders to provide home warranty coverage for all new homes built in the province starting fall 2013.

Municipal Affairs Minister Doug Griffiths says if things go wrong, the legislation gives stronger protection to get those homes repaired.

Griffiths admits homebuyers needed increased protection because of shoddy construction. …
