Members of Alberta's Progressive Conservative Party meet in Calgary starting today to debate their constitution and decide whether it's time to fence out their federal cousins.

Members are to vote on a motion this weekend to strip the automatic voting privileges given to Alberta Conservative M-Ps.

The motion highlights a growing rift between the two parties.

It was plainly visible in Alberta's recent general election, which saw some federal Conservatives supporting opposition Wildrose candidates. (The Canadian Press)



A former Olympic boxer has been sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison for severely beating a man during a robbery two years ago.

Forty-eight-year-old Brent Coco Kosolofski of Calgary, was scheduled to start his trial yesterday but instead he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, unlawful confinement, uttering threats and robbery.

Court was told that Kosolofski and another person went to a farm near Stavely and tried to steal several items. A man who had some horses on the property was badly beaten when he attempted to stop them.

Kosolofski represented Canada at the 1988 Summer Olympics and later turned pro and fought for a world title. (CJOC)



A judge has denied bail to an Edmonton couple accused of abusing their twin daughters.

One of the girls died in September when she was taken off life support.

The parents tried to stop the move, but the courts sided with doctors who said it was best to let the brain-dead child die.

Charges against the couple include aggravated assault, criminal negligence causing bodily harm and failing to provide the necessities of life. (The Canadian Press)
