Opposition politicians are blasting Alberta's Conservative government for its estimate that the province will rack up a deficit of up to three billion dollars this year.

Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith says the government's short-sighted approach to finances is coming home to roost.

N-D-P Leader Brian Mason says the province is on a path of high spending and high debt that simply cannot be sustained.

The court martial of a Calgary reservist will go to a military jury on Saturday.

Final arguments in the case of Major Darryl Watts wrapped up this morning. Watts faces several charges, including manslaughter, following the death of a soldier after an anti-personnel mine blast on an Afghanistan training range in 2010.

Prosecutor Major Dylan Kerr says Watts was the platoon commander and should have made sure his men were safe.

Lawyer Balfour Der says one good soldier has already been lost and says Watts is the kind of man who should be leading troops. (The Canadian Press)



Three Saskatchewan women suffering life-altering pain because of complications from a surgical mesh are begging the province to pay for its complete removal.

The women all had surgical meshes inserted to help with sagging pelvic organs and urinary incontinence.

But the women say their meshes have failed and are poking into other organs.

They say only a doctor in California is trained to completely remove the mesh and they want the province to cover the 30-thousand-dollar cost. (The Canadian Press)
