Education Minister Don McRae is defending the government's standardized tests for grade school students after the N-D-P said it would change the tests if it's elected in May.

McRae says the Foundation Skills Assessment tests provide schools and parents with important information about student achievement in math, reading and writing and he's concerned the New Democrats want to overhaul the tests.

He's also asking whether unions are really running the N-D-P -- a thinly-veiled reference to the powerful B-C Teachers Federation.

But Opposition education critic Robin Austin says his party's plan to revise the school tests will not be part of a rubber-stamped wish list by the teachers' union. (The Canadian Press)




Heavy snow is pounding much of southern B-C, making driving difficult and pushing up the avalanche threat.

Travel advisories are up for several major highways, including the Trans-Canada north of Hope, the Coquihalla, Okanagan Connector and Highway 97-C north of Merritt.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre says the new snow is falling in areas buried by as much as 60 centimetres by earlier storms, and that's pushed the avalanche danger to high in several areas, including the inland south coast and north and south Columbia regions.

The centre says the risk will become even greater after the latest storm passes and the weather warms up. (The Canadian Press,CHNL,CKFR)




A health official says there's no sign the norovirus will slow down in B-C this winter.

Tasleem Juma of the Fraser Health Authority says that's because there's a new strain of the bug and people don't have any immunity to it.

She says the Sydney strain isn't any worse than previous versions in terms of causing vomiting and stomach pain, it's just different.

The virus has forced the temporary segregation of several hospital wards in B-C and also struck day cares and senior's facilities. …
