TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) Minister Yeh Kuang-shih ([...]) yesterday said that the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport MRT will not be opened in October as scheduled due to flaws in the construction.

"The opening has been postponed as a flaw has been discovered in finished wires and the construction of the signaling system has fallen behind," Yeh said. "The BHSR has been working hard to solve these issues with the contractor."

Yeh said that the Bureau of High Speed Rail (BHSR, [...]) will seek compensation from the construction contractor because of the delayed opening. The contractor could be fined NT$12.5 million daily starting from Oct. 1 with a maximum total fine of NT$2.5 billion.

"It will take about two weeks for the new opening date for the airport MRT to be determined," said Yeh.

Construction began in 2006.
