Coast Guard Should Protect Front-Line Islets: Kao

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Two outlying front-line islets should be guarded by Coast Guard or police forces once the government decides to demilitarize them and open them up to tourists, Defense Minister Kao Hua-chu ([...]) said yesterday.

Commenting on the plan to allow travelers to Dadan ([...]) and Erdan ([...]) islets, which are administered as part of the offshore Kinmen County ([...]), Kao said yesterday that if the government approves the proposal, the ministry hopes the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) and other law enforcement authorities can take over responsibility for the security of the islets.

"We should learn from the example of the Dokdo islets," the minister said, adding that the islets, known in Japan as the Takeshima islets and located in the Sea of Japan, are currently guarded by Korean coast guard forces.

"There are different opinions between central government and the county government regarding the proposal," Kao said yesterday when asked to comment on the issue by a Kuomintang lawmaker in the Legislative Yuan. …
