Acquittal stands in Walmart baby case

OTTAWA -- The Supreme Court of Canada has upheld the acquittal of a Saskatchewan woman who gave birth in a Walmart bathroom stall and left the newborn in a toilet. In a 5-2 split decision, the court ruled in favour of April Halkett, who was found not guilty in June 2009 of abandoning the baby boy two years earlier in the store in Prince Albert, Sask. PHOTO. New food-safety rules coming: minister

SASKATOON -- Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz says the country's food watchdog is planning to impose tougher rules to deal with the threat of E. coli in slaughterhouses. He says Canadian Food Inspection Agency will also require that meat plants producing mechanically tenderized beef cuts, such as steaks or roasts, label the products as tenderized and include cooking instructions for consumers.
