TAIPEI, Taiwan -- When asked about his thoughts on getting nominated for this year's Golden Melody Awards ([...]), Yu Si-lu ([...]) said, "I quit my day job to play music. Getting nominated makes me seem less like an idiot."

The career of a musician hasn't always proven to be the most lucrative in Taiwan.

My Skin Against Your Skin ([...]), Golden Melody nominee for best band and winner of last year's Golden Indie Music Award ([...]) for the same category, is made up of bassist Yu Si-lu and vocalist Andrea Huang ([...]).

Yu and Huang met as university students and formed a band shortly afterward. The group, although achieving moderate success in the local indie music scene, didn't manage to survive their graduation, as Yu went on to serve in the military to fulfill his duties as a citizen, while Huang decided to get a "proper job." The two of them, however, kept in touch and continued to share their ideas about music.

My Skin Against Your Skin was formed in 2010 as a continuation of Yu and Huang's musical collaboration. The name of the band is derived from an erotically tinged Yves Saint Laurent short titled "Your skin against my skin" - eroticism being one of the themes that the band subtly revolves around.

Their first single, "Jealous Lover/Dirty Babe," was released and sold out in 2010. In 2011, Yu and Huang were invited to perform at the NXNE festival in Toronto and at the Midi Modern Music Festival in Beijing, sharing the stage with the likes of Cui Jian ([...]), known as the "father of Chinese rock." My Skin Against Your Skin later embarked on a tour of Japan, Hong Kong and Macau, and was selected as one of the top 10 noteworthy bands by StreetVoice, an organization that is becoming increasingly influential in the promotion of Taiwanese underground music.

An eponymous EP was released in 2012, the same year that saw them win three Golden Indie Music Awards as well as share the stage with Faith Yang ([...]) and Sandee Chan ([...]) at the Hohaiyan Rock Festival ([...]). My Skin Against Your Skin visited South Korea to perform at the Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival and, in the same year, opened for The Horrors and The Pretty Reckless back home in Taiwan.

This year, they received their first Golden Melody nomination.

My Skin Against Your Skin's sound can be described as being both abrasive and sensual. They are one of the few bands that can pull off a number about the apocalypse as if the world were to end in flames under a planetary-sized disco ball.

Guest drummer Lee Wetherall ([...]) says that he is consistently requested to play slightly behind the beat and that a great deal of emphasis is placed on groove. Relying often on three- or even two-chord song structures, Yu creates a dense, multilayered soundscape with a Fender Precision bass guitar spiked with a good dose of overdrive/distortion and other effects. …
