An editorial from the Corner Brook Western Star, published July 20:

Those who predicted -- or hoped -- that the price of gasoline would be lower this year than recent summers are getting a dose of reality in the last couple of weeks.

This week the price of gasoline in this province went up another five cents a litre.

That's after jumping about the same steep amount last week.

It puts the price in the $1.45 a litre range and there seems to be no relief in sight.

It's the same old story from those who make fortunes playing with the price of crude on world markets.

The latest excuse is the violence in Egypt.

The market players say the price of crude is climbing because there is a fear the trouble there will disrupt supplies ... so they jack up the cost to the consumer.

If increases continue on this trajectory, we might just eclipse the highest level we reached in this province a few summers ago. …
