22 Children, Teenagers Die in Accidents in First Vacation Month: Report

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A tally of media reports last month by the Child Welfare League Foundation (CWLF) showed that 22 children and teenagers died in accidents last month, the first month of summer vacation.

The foundation survey of media showed that there were 22 accidental deaths and 14 injuries in July. There were also 20 cases in which people found themselves to the victims of scams.

Drowning and traffic accidents were the most common causes of summer accidents, according to the CWLF's findings.

Ten cases of drowning were reported last month, in which seven young people were killed and two injured. Local media also reported nine traffic accidents that killed seven and injured eight.

The CWLF reminds students, parents and government to pay more attention to the holiday schedule arrangements of children and teenagers to prevent accidents.

Parents should pay heed to the safety, climate and environmental changes of swimming areas during summer vacation; especially avoiding more dangerous actions such as high-diving. Under-age people should be accompanied by adults when swimming and playing in water, the CWLF reminded. …
