The Liberal government is kicking off the start of the fall session of the legislature with action to create an independent financial watchdog.

Finance Minister Charles Sousa says he'll introduce legislation today to create a financial accountability officer to keep an eye on legislative spending.

That was a key demand of the N-D-P exchange for supporting the minority Liberal government's budget.

N-D-P Leader Andrea Horwath says her party will make sure the Liberals also keep their promises to cut auto insurance rates by 15 per cent and ban young people from using tanning beds. (The Canadian Press)



More questions today for Tory Leader Tim Hudak about a controversial housing allowance claimed by his ousted finance critic.

Peter Shurman has said Hudak approved his claim for just over 20-thousand dollars last year to subsidize his Toronto apartment after he moved to Niagara-on-the-Lake.

But Hudak says he didn't know and didn't approve it.

He says he asked Shurman to repay the money but he refused, so Hudak removed him from his post as Tory finance critic.

Hudak says elected officials should be held to a higher standard -- even if they follow the rules. (The Canadian Press)



The five-person jury has been selected today for the coroner's inquest into the starvation death of a five-year-old Toronto boy.

By the time he starved to death more than 10 years ago, young Jeffrey Baldwin weighed less than he did when he was a baby.

His grandparents were convicted in 2006 of second-degree murder.

The jury consists of four women and one man and the presiding coroner is Doctor Peter Clark. (The Canadian Press)
