Ma Urges Legislature to Speed Up Deliberations on Trade Pact

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- President Ma Ying-jeou yesterday urged the Legislature to speed up its progress regarding the cross-strait service trade pact.

The president yesterday met with the heads of the five yuans at the Presidential Office. Legislative Yuan Deputy Speaker Hung Hsiu-chu ([...]) went to the meeting on behalf of Legislative Yuan Speaker Wang Jin-pyng ([...]) who took a leave of absence on account of his brother's funeral.

The president said that the Legislature is still holding public hearings over the cross-strait trade in services pact, which was inked this year, while foreign investors in Taiwan as well as the island's neighbors are all concerned as to whether or not Taiwan has the determination and sincerity to push for liberalization.

The Legislature should speed up its progress so that the pact can be moved into the deliberation phase, the president said.

The trade in services pact will soon be followed by a trade in goods pact, the president said, urging the Legislature to step up its progress. …
