Smellie wins 100 at Canadian championships

MONCTON, N.B. - Toronto natives Gavin Smellie and Crystal Emmanuel won their respective men's and women's 100-metre finals at the Canadian track and field championships on Saturday.

Smellie crossed the line in 10.37 seconds while Emmanuel won the women's title in 11.47.

In other track events, Daundre Barnaby of Brampton, Ont., finished first in the 400, using a strong home stretch run over the last 100 metres to take the men's title in a time of 45.96. Edmonton's Carline Muir claimed the women's title in 52.13.

Matthew Hughes of Oshawa, Ont. and Jessica Furlan of Regina both defended their titles in the 3,000 steeplechase. Furlan's time of 9:55.71 was good for a Canadian championship record, while Hughes finished in 8:32.33.

Jessica O'Connell of Calgary won the women's 5,000 in 15:47.35. Cameron Levins of Campbell River, B.C., took the men's race in 13:25.70, less than a second short of Sean Kaley's 13:15.16 championship record. …
