Palestinians and Israelis clash in Calgary

CALGARY - A protest in downtown Calgary over the conflict in the Gaza Strip turned violent Friday around the supper hour.

Hundreds of people came out to city hall in support of Palestinians who have been killed by Israeli fire in Gaza, but a fight broke out when a handful of Israeli supporters showed up.

Some men began pushing and shoving, and one man stomped on an Israeli flag before police moved in and set up a line of officers to separate the groups and try to ease tensions.

Both sides blamed the other for causing the disturbance.

"They wanted to do a peaceful rally and then they got provoked by pro-Israeli supporters," said Saima Jamal of Justice for Palestine. "One person or the other person, their tempers got heated a little bit."

"There should be no violence," said Judy Shapiro of the Calgary Jewish Federation. "That is totally against Canadian values. There is a cause; there are two sides to every story and both sides have equal right and opportunity to say it. …
