Crown seeks 20-year parole ban in killing

BRAMPTON -- A Toronto man convicted in the "savage" killing and dismemberment of his ex-girlfriend should have to spend 20 years behind bars before he can apply for parole, prosecutors said Friday. Chun Qi Jiang was found guilty in June of second-degree murder in the brutal slaying of 41-year-old Guang Hua Liu, with whom he'd had an on-again, off-again relationship for four years.

Teen faces charges in fatal collision

TORONTO -- A 22-year-old man and 16-year-old boy are facing street racing charges in connection with a crash in Toronto that killed a teenage cyclist. Police allege a Honda Civic and BMW sedan were racing in the city's northeast (at Sheppard Avenue East near Neilson Road) on Aug. 1 when the BMV struck a 17-year-old boy riding a bike.

CNE air show plane skids off Pearson runway

MISSISSAUGA -- No one was injured when a plane doing a practice run for the Canadian National Exhibition air show in Toronto this weekend skidded off a runway into a ditch at Pearson International Airport. Peel region police say the incident occurred when the plane's landing gear collapsed Friday afternoon.

Orphaned moose dies at Sudbury rehab centre

SUDBURY -- An orphaned moose calf that was rescued by a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Sudbury has died. The baby moose named Oliver had been cared for by staff at the Wild at Heart centre since late May, after the mother of the two-day-old calf was fatally struck by a vehicle.
