TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's military yesterday decided to scale down a scheduled live-fire drill on the offshore island of Penghu amid a round of protests launched by residents of the island county.

Military sources told the Chinese-language Apple Daily yesterday that the military was originally set to kick off a three-day live fire exercise yesterday in waters near Penghu Magong city's Shanshuei Beach ([...]).

However, a round of protests launched by residents in nearby Shanshuei Borough that sent 26 rubber rafts into waters near the beach, within the live-fire testing range, forced the military to temporarily scale down the drill by dropping the live-fire exercise.

Sources told the newspaper that due to the insistence of locals, it has already scaled down the scheduled drill to three days from the original five-day span. It also decided to use only 400 rounds of ammunition instead of the previously scheduled 2,000. …
