An editorial from the Corner Brook Western Star, published Jan. 23:

We got through it! Yes, another Blue Monday is now behind us. It's that pesky third Monday of January that has been branded by some as the most depressing day of the year.

It's a combination of things that bring the focus on that particular day, or even this time of year, as depressing, as we cope with the aftereffects of the caloric foods from the Christmas period and of course, the aftereffects of the bills rolling in from the festive period.

But isn't it just another day of the year?

Dealing with overindulgences of Christmas and the bills is something that people have become accustomed to. It's winter in Newfoundland and it's cold. If we haven't learned to live with that by now, it's likely time to move south.

The longest day of the year is more than a month behind us now and each day we get a little more sunlight. Winter activities are getting into full swing on ski slopes, cross-country trails and snowmobile trails. …
