Mental visualization helps hone surgical skills


TORONTO -- It's said that practice makes perfect, whether serving an ace in tennis, nailing a three-pointer in basketball or being able to rocket a puck past a particularly agile goalie. But practice doesn't have to be physical: mental training using visualization can also up one's game -- and not only in the domain of sports. Doctors also can benefit from the principles of cognitive rehearsal, says Dr. Teodor Grantcharov, a laparoscopic surgeon at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto who has used the technique to optimize his operating room performance since his days as a resident. Montreal's Ritz-Carlton named best hotel in Canada


WASHINGTON -- U.S. News and World Report has ranked Montreal's Ritz-Carlton for the second year in a row as the best hotel in Canada, citing its stylish decor and amenities including a greenhouse and a French restaurant from celebrity chef Daniel Boulud.Rosewood Hotel Georgia in Vancouver, which features an indoor saltwater pool and multiple dining options, was ranked No. 2, followed by the Trump International Hotel and Tower, 65 storeys high, in downtown Toronto.


What! Facebook's down? No storm selfies during brief outage


SEOUL -- No storm selfies, hookups, status updates. With Facebook and Instagram down for nearly an hour overnight, what were legions of users to do?Turn to Twitter, of course. To talk about Facebook. The hashtag "#facebookdown" generated a cascade of tweets, including an image of a T-shirt with the words "I survived #facebookdown." Distillers get hopping mad for new liquor flavouring trend


A new flavour is brewing in the world of craft liquors as distillers borrow from the beer world and add hops for an aromatic twist.Recent products include hopped whiskies such as R5 from Charbay Artisan Distillery & Winery in the Napa Valley and Hopmonster from the Corsair Distillery with operations in Tennessee and Kentucky. Other examples include Hatter Royale from New Holland Brewing Co. in Michigan and Hopskey from Square One Brewery in St. Louis. In the non-whiskey category there's Hophead Vodka from Anchor Distilling Co. in San Francisco and a hopped gin from the New York Distilling Co.
