Threat 'Reality' Spurs Tough Antiterrorism Measures

With the Group of Seven summit meeting to be held in Japan next year in mind, the government will strengthen measures to prevent terrorism, including beefing up security at airports and public facilities.

In the wake of the recent hostage crisis, the government held a meeting of its headquarters to promote measures to deal with international organized crime and international terrorism at the Prime Minister's Office on Tuesday. The headquarters is led by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.

With the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) threatening to launch terrorist attacks against Japanese nationals, government officials attending the meeting affirmed that the government will take measures to prevent terrorists from entering the country and thoroughly ensure the safety of Japanese living abroad.

The government plans to speedily strengthen antiterrorism measures as the G-7 summit meeting is scheduled to be held next year and the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games are scheduled to be held in 2020.

"Terrorist threats against Japan are becoming a reality," Suga said at the beginning of the meeting. "We must share this recognition and make efforts to prevent terrorism and ensure the safety of Japanese abroad."

Suga also instructed relevant ministries and agencies to check whether antiterrorism measures currently being taken are functioning properly.

At the meeting, the participants affirmed that the government will strengthen activities to collect information in cooperation with relevant organizations of other countries and analyze it. The government will also implement thorough immigration control to prevent terrorists from entering the country and step up vigilance at important locations such as airports and public facilities. …
