An editorial from the Toronto Star, published July 9:

With Canada sending more than 700 athletes to the Toronto Pan American Games -- almost triple the country's Olympic contingent in 2012 -- hopes are running high for medal glory. The goal is for Canada to finish no worse than second place in the overall count (with the United States traditionally occupying Number One spot.) And there's every reason to expect success.

Canada's Pan Am team isn't just its largest ever for this event; it's also considered the strongest. There isn't nearly enough space here to celebrate this country's many exciting prospects -- not with so many established stars and up-and-comers.

But any list of stand-outs must include sprinter Andre De Grasse, a Markham 20-year-old who is the first Canadian in 16 years to run 100 metres in under 10 seconds. He has truly returned this country to the world sprint stage.

In the pool, swimming gold is a strong possibility from powerful Ryan Cochrane, 26, of Victoria. Another dominant contender is trampoline star Rosie MacLennan, 26, of King City. She's Canada's only gold medalist at the 2012 Olympics in London and also the defending Pan Am champion. …
