Miaoli, Hualien and Yilan to Offer Blood Screenings for Lead Poisoning

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Residents exposed to water from old lead pipes in Miaoli, Hualien and Yilan counties will be soon be offered blood screening at local hospitals, the Taiwan Water Corp. (TWC, [...]) said yesterday.

Details were discussed with the public health bureaus in the three regions, and the company will soon make official announcements about how the inspections would be carried out, the TWC said.

A water fee exemption of 5 cubic meters per month will also be offered to households until the lead water pipes serving their buildings are replaced - following the same measures made by the Taipei Water Department (TWD, [...]) in the Greater Taipei area.

According to TWD Commissioner Chen Chin-hsiang ([...]), the water bill reduction translates to a savings of between NT$25 and NT$38 a month per household - based on a unit price of NT$5 to NT$7.6 per cubic meter.

The TWC also said it has completed its first round of testing In Yilan, with all 150 water samples passing the test, meeting the standard for drinking water. …
