Canada's Fathoullin qualifies at World Cup

MONTREAL - Sasha Fathoullin was one-of-nine Canadians to earn elimination round races on Friday at the ISU World Cup short-track speedskating event.

Fathoullin, a 20-year-old from Calgary, qualified for the quarter-final round of Saturday's 1,000 metre event and Sunday's 500 quarter-final.

"I didn't come here with expectations that were too great. I just wanted to get a feel for things at my first World Cup," said Fathoullin. "To win my first race (the 1,000) was more than I expected, so I'm really happy."

Joining Fathoullin in the 1,000 event after qualifying are Charles and Francois Hamelin, of Sainte-Julie, Que., Samuel Girard of Ferland-et-Boilleau, Que., and Patrick Duffy of Oakville, Ont. …
