MOHW Offers 500 Scholarships to Fill Physician Gap

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Ministry of Health and Welfare (MHW, [...]) will offer 500 scholarships to students studying medicine for the next five years, officials said.

The MHW will subsidize each scholarship recipient a total of NT$130,000 per semester, on the condition that they practice medicine in rural hospitals for a minimum of six years after completing their training.

To fill shortages of medical personnel, particularly in divisions such as surgery, general internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, and emergency medicine, the government has reinstated the scholarship funding program, which had been cut off in 2009, said ministry official Lai Jen-lan ([...]).

This new policy is also a response to the ministry's forecast that Taiwan, in 2025, is set to join the club of "super-aged nations" - where more than one in five of the population is 65 years or older, said Lai.

From 2016 to 2020, 100 recipients each year will be funded to study medicine at National Taiwan University, National Yang-Ming University, National Defense Medical Center, Kaohsiung Medical University, Chang Gung University, National Cheng Kung University or Tzu Chi University. …
