TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je ([...]) said yesterday that the "1992 Consensus" has been unable to resolve the issues plaguing cross-strait relations.

Reporters yesterday asked Ko for his views on President Ma Ying-jeou and mainland Chinese leader Xi Jinping's meeting in Singapore on Saturday, according to the Central News Agency.

"There was no need to meet simply for the sake of meeting. That is my view," Ko responded.

The focus of the meeting should not have been on making headlines but on creating substance, Ko said.

The Taipei mayor continued that the "1992 Consensus" as a concept was "only a headline."

In a press conference that followed the summit, Ma had reiterated that the basis of cross-strait relations was the "1992 Consensus," a controversial agreement that there is only one China but that both sides of the Taiwan Strait are free to decide what that means. …
