Plane lands safely after apparent bird strike

CALGARY - A Canadian North charter plane destined for Fort MacKay, Alta., was forced to return to Calgary International Airport and make an emergency landing Wednesday evening after striking some birds in midair.

The plane landed safely and there were no injuries to any of the more than 130 passengers, all workers headed to a Canadian Natural Resources work site.

People on the ground reported hearing a loud boom and witnessing flames coming from the engine of the Boeing 737-300.

Passenger Rob Pendry recorded video of what looked like sparks and bright light coming from one of the plane's engines.

"Big thump, and yup, fire came on and away he went," said Pendry. "It was quite of nerve-wracking, that's for sure."

Passenger Cory Little described hearing a big bang and seeing what he described as a fireball. …
