Woman jailed for fatal hit and run of longboarder

RED DEER, Alta. - A central Alberta woman has been sentenced to a year in jail for a hit and run that killed a teenage longboarder.

Jessica Masyk, who is 26, had pleaded guilty in August to failing to stay at the scene of a collision, public mischief and driving while unauthorized.

Trystan Sorenson was 18 when he was killed while longboarding near Penhold in May 2014.

He was hit by an SUV that was later found burned out in a field.

Two men were convicted of torching it.

In handing down the sentence, Judge John Holmes in Red Deer court called Masyk's actions "callous in the extreme."

Masyk also faces a two-year driving ban when she is released.

The sentence is more than the six to eight months the Crown and defence had been seeking. …
