Charges upgraded against youth in woman's death

WINNIPEG - A murder charge has been upgraded against a Winnipeg youth accused in the death of a woman who was attacked in her home.

The youth now faces a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Kathleen Leary last May.

Officers who came to Leary's home following a 911 call found her with severe injuries to her upper body.

Court was told Leary, who was 66, was attacked with a knife, a metal rod and a hammer.

The youth, who was 16 at the time he was arrested, was originally charged with second-degree murder.

Police say the Crown authorized the upgrade after further investigation and review.

The accused cannot be named because he's under 18. Police say he was known to the victim. …
