Manitoba Group Wants to Prevent Workplace Injuries to Young People

Group fights workplace injuries to the young

WINNIPEG - A group called Safe Work Manitoba is working to try and limit the number of young people hurt in the workplace.

It says 4,880 workers between the ages of 15 and 24 were forced to miss at least a day of work or seek medical attention because of an injury.

Spokesman Jamie Hall says young people are injured in all sorts of environments, such as on construction sites, at supermarkets and department stores, and in restaurants and hotels.

He says the injuries range from cuts and sprains to back injuries from over-exertion.

The organization has launched a Young Worker Injury Prevention Strategy aimed at educating workers, their families, educators and employers.

The organization also says 17 young workers have died as a result of workplace incidents in Manitoba over the last decade. …
