WHL Roundup: Broncos get past Hitmen


SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. - Lane Pederson had two goals and an assist as the Swift Current Broncos snapped a six-game losing streak with a 7-4 win over the Calgary Hitmen on Friday night in Western Hockey League action.

Jon Martin also scored twice for the Broncos (13-26-5). Jamal Watson, Tyler Steenbergen and Scott Feser rounded out the attack while Artyom Minulin tacked on four helpers.

Keegan Kanzig, Beck Malenstyn, Pavel Karnaukhov and Jordy Stallard provided the offence for Calgary (26-17-2).

Travis Child made 25 saves for the win in net. Cordy Porter took the loss after kicking out 13-of-19 shots in 40 minutes. Nik Amundrud went the rest of the way, making two saves in relief.

The Broncos scored twice on six chances with the man advantage while Calgary had one power-play goal on four opportunities.

Andrew Fyten of the Hitmen was ejected midway through the second period after a major penalty for checking to the head.



BRANDON, Man. -- Jordan Papirny stopped all 29 shots he faced as the Wheat Kings blanked Red Deer.

Jordan Thomson, Tyler Coulter, Macoy Erkamps and Nolan Patrick all scored for Brandon (27-12-4), which won its fourth in a row.

Rylan Toth turned aside 29-of-32 shots in 40 minutes of work before giving way to Trevor Martin, who made 14 saves for the Rebels (29-14-2).



CRANBROOK, B.C. -- Reid Gardiner scored twice and added two assists as Prince Albert doubled up the Ice.

Simon Stransky had two power-play goals and an assist for the Raiders (26-14-4), who won their third in a row.

Tanner Lishchynsky and Austin Wellsby, on the power play, opened the scoring for Kootenay (8-34-3).



LETHBRIDGE, Alta. -- Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Andrew Nielsen and Cory Millette both had a pair of goals as the Hurricanes downed Kamloops for their sixth-straight win.

Egor Babenko and Ben Duperreault also scored for Lethbridge (32-12-0), which got three assists from Kord Pankewicz.

Matt Revel and Deven Sideroff had goals for the Blazers (21-15-7).
