Father, son killed in head-on snowmobile crash

POWERVIEW, Man. - Relatives are calling the death of a 49-year-old man and his 14-year-old son on the weekend a freak accident.

Gary Schellenberg and his son Evan were driving snowmobiles near the family's cabin at English Lake in southeastern Manitoba at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning when they collided head-on.

Another son, Russell Schellenberg, said Monday that his little brother was on his own machine headed from the cabin toward a campfire 1.5 kilometres away at the same time his father and some other riders were headed toward the cabin from the campfire.

Somewhere in between, they smashed into each other -- Russell said it's possible one of them hit an ice rut or his father's goggles fogged up.

"I check out my dad and he's not breathing, so I rush over to Evan," he said. "As carefully as we could we pulled off his helmet -- he was somewhat breathing. …
