Lawsuit by mother of abused sisters moving ahead

REGINA - A Regina lawyer representing the mother of two abused sisters says the woman's lawsuit against Social Services can move ahead now that a criminal trial is almost over.

Tony Merchant says the recent trial of Tammy and Kevin Goforth highlighted some of the major failings of the department.

Tammy Goforth was found guilty on Saturday of second-degree murder and her husband was convicted of manslaughter in the death of a four-year-old girl in their care.

Both were found guilty of causing bodily harm to her two-year-old sister.

The trial heard that the Goforths were named guardians within a few weeks of the girls arriving at their home, so there was no followup by Social Services.

The rules have since changed, but Merchant says standards of care were severely lacking in 2012. …
