TAIPEI, Taiwan -- General Chamber of Commerce president Lai Cheng-i ([...]) on Wednesday said he intended to urge Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president-elect Tsai Ing-wen ([...]) against raising taxes.

Tsai has backed a raft of bills coming up soon for debate in the ninth Legislative Yuan, which has a DPP majority.

One act is for a national long-term care program to be financed by raising the sales tax from 5 percent to 5.5 percent and the inheritance tax from 15 to 20 percent.

Lai said Wednesday that he intended to speak with the president-elect on behalf of Taiwan's business community.

He and other representatives from Taiwan's business chambers are scheduled to meet with Tsai on March 2.
